An Ipad is a touch screen, hand held device that is produced by apple. Ipads have become increasingly popular and have therefore made an impact on classroom learning.
The software used on Ipads are ‘apps’ (short for applications). There are many educational apps that teachers and parents can install on an Ipad to assist in student learning.
For Teachers: It is important to ensure that the apps students are using on their Ipads are of high quality. One way of assessing this is through a rubric to determine which aspects of different apps will be beneficial for students learning. (Walsh, 2012). Here is an example of a rubric designed to assess the quality of Ipad apps. |
Teachers can use a number of different Ipad apps across all KLAs. The diagram below gives an example of how an array of different apps can be used in the classroom.
For Parents:
Educational apps on Ipads can be beneficial for students' learning. Quality apps can help students to revise key concepts within literacy and numeracy as well as assist with the research and development of ideas in other content areas. Students can also use other features of an Ipad such as the camera to document their work. They can use the internet to research information for projects or upload/email information, documents, and pictures to their teacher or class web page to assist them with their work at school.

For Students:
When students use Ipads they are able to explore, research and document their learning. Students can access a range of different apps to help them practice core skills as well as research and present information.
Activity:
*Explore the apps already installed on your Ipad
*Find 2 new apps from the diagram above (or any others of your choice) and install them
*Explore each app and determine whether it would be beneficial for students’ learning. (extension for teachers -> Use the rubric above to assess the usefulness of this app)
